Mild weather, world-class motorsports, and festivals fill three perfect months. Here's what to book and why.
Winter in Abu Dhabi is straightforward: the temperature never forces you indoors. Between December and February, daytime highs hover around 25–26°C with lows of 15–17°C at night. That's comfortable for the things a hot city usually denies you—walking, sitting outside without sweating through your shirt, spending time in the desert past dark.
This is also when Abu Dhabi fills with events. The Liwa International Festival takes over the Al Dhafra desert for 23 days. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix fills Yas Island. Smaller festivals, light art installations, and seasonal markets run through early January. If you're booking now for next winter (December 2026–February 2027), hotel prices spike—that's the trade-off—but even then, the shoulder months of November and early March offer similar weather at lower rates.

The weather between December and February hits highs of 26°C with lows of 15–17°C during nights or early mornings. You don't need to pack winter wear, but a light scarf and jacket will be more than enough. Light sweaters or jackets are ideal for cooler evenings, and closed shoes make sense for desert excursions. Even in winter you can experience sunny days when the sun can be stronger than you realize, so sunscreen stays essential. Strict dress codes apply, especially in religious sites like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, where women must cover their arms, legs, and hair; an abaya and headscarf are required.
Liwa International Festival

The next edition of Liwa International Festival is scheduled to take place from 11 December 2026 to 2 January 2027. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Tal Moreeb, the 300-metre UAE's tallest dune, the festival brings 23 days of culture, adventure, motorsports, music, and family fun to the golden dunes of the Al Dhafra region. The festival kicks off with Freestyle Drift on 12–13 and 22–23 December, followed by the Spartan Race Liwa on 13 December and Bike Drag Racing on 14 December; Falconry runs from 15–17 December and the Car Stunt Championship on 19–20 December. Visitors can pre-book glamping tents or local accommodation, or bring their own RVs and tents to camp under the stars in the heart of Liwa.
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

The Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix illuminates the track at Yas Marina Circuit with nail-biting action, where drivers like Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc bring the season to a close in the grand finale before enjoying incredible concerts and fireworks displays. This high-octane race is a dynamic winter festival featuring luxury experiences, concerts, and fan zones, including driver meet-and-greets and music activities; F1 cars speed under the city's unique twilight-to-night setting and afterward, keep the party going with live performances by global superstars, with VIP packages allowing you to dine trackside and stay in the Yas Hotel, which overlooks the circuit. Book tickets early; December pricing is steeper than the shoulder months.
Manar Abu Dhabi light art festival

Manar Abu Dhabi, the city's light art exhibition, illuminates Abu Dhabi's waterfronts, mangroves, and islands from 15 November 2025 to 4 January 2026, with over 23 new light sculptures, projections, and interactive installations created by both Emirati and international artists. The theme this year is 'The Light Compass,' with the main hub at Jubail Island and exhibitions extending for the first time to Al Ain. Expect large-scale glowing art pieces, water reflections, and creative performances; visitors can also enjoy talks, workshops, and special performances throughout the event.
MOTN Festival

The MOTN Festival returns this winter to Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra, running from 24 November to 4 January 2026, bringing family-friendly fun, food, and live entertainment. Expect thrilling rides, shopping, cultural zones, and concerts; the event celebrates UAE's unity and family spirit, offering activities for all ages and is one of Abu Dhabi's favorite winter attractions. Unlike Liwa (which is desert-focused and motorsports-driven), MOTN brings the festival feel into the city and satellite towns.
Desert safari and dune bashing

The comfortably refreshing weather, ranging from 15°C to 25°C in the months of November to March, is the best opportunity to get outdoors and explore the desert. Camel trekking is an excellent opportunity to explore Abu Dhabi's enduring deserts, indulging in original Emirati culture; professionals assist beginners and camels are sociable, making the adventure safe and memorable. Winterfest returns with even more magic and excitement, transforming the park into a winter wonderland complete with dazzling light displays, festive music, and a host of special activities that bring the spirit of the season to life. Warner Bros. World catches the Winter Spectacular event, featuring seasonal programming alongside the usual attractions. SeaWorld's magic of winter includes penguin nesting season and the SeaWonder festival. Winter weather makes daytime visits far more pleasant than the scorching summer months.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and cultural sites

The winter season (December to mid-March) promises perfectly balmy weather, ideal for exploring cultural landmarks. Visiting religious sites requires appropriate clothing; women must cover their arms, legs, and hair, and an abaya and headscarf are required at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Winter temperatures make walking and exploring these sites during the day genuinely comfortable, unlike the summer scramble between air-conditioned vehicles. Visit early mornings or late afternoons to avoid crowds.
Corniche waterfront and beach

The water temperature is around 24°C in December, warm and comfortable for swimming. The golden sands of Saadiyat Island are perfect for meditating, taking a relaxing walk along the sea, or sunbathing; the winter sun continues to maintain a pleasant, warm climate, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as kayaking and paddleboarding. Winter is the ideal time for strolling the Corniche or walking along the grand canal front, and for city travel and shopping malls and the airport.

December is the most expensive month to stay in a hotel in Abu Dhabi, when the average room rate can rise to $362 per night, compared to the cheapest month, July, with an average price of $182 per night. The average hotel price in Abu Dhabi is $77, with average budget hotel prices around $48 and luxury hotels around $177. Winter occupancy is high; book December trips by September at latest, and consider November or early March for similar weather at 20–40% lower rates. For Liwa Festival specifically, visitors can pre-book glamping tents or local accommodation, or bring their own RVs and tents.
