How to Get Around Dubai: Public Transport, Taxis and Costs

A silver Nol card slides into the gate and you're through—no coins, no drama, just a beep and you're in the system. Dubai's public transport works on a card you load with money, then tap at every journey's start and end. The system is zoned, meaning your fare depends on how many zones you cross, not how many stops. Peak hours on the metro (7–9 AM and 5–7 PM on weekdays) pack crowds; late night, you switch to taxis or the few night buses that run. Silver Nol Card

A Silver card costs AED 25 at the machine (which includes AED 19 of starting credit) and works on metro, buses, tram, water bus, and RTA parking meters. Silver Nol cards are capped at AED 14 per day. After hitting the cap, rides are free until midnight. Best for anyone staying more than a day or two; the daily cap means you're insured against the cost of multiple journeys. If you transfer from metro to bus within 30 minutes, the bus journey is FREE if you haven't reached daily cap.
Nol 1-Day Pass

The Standard (Regular) class NOL 1 Day Pass costs AED 20. This covers unlimited travel in all zones on the Dubai Metro (standard cabins), all RTA buses, the Dubai Tram, and selected water bus routes. The pass is valid until midnight on the day of first use, so plan your travel accordingly. Activate it early if you're sightseeing all day; a single metro journey from the airport plus three or four trips around the city nearly pays for itself.
Metro from Airport Terminal 1 or 3

The metro fare from Airport Terminal 3 to Financial Centre station (Downtown area) is approximately AED 7.50 (~USD 2.04) on a Silver NOL card. The journey takes roughly 25–30 minutes with no traffic delays, making it significantly cheaper than a taxi for solo travellers. The Red Line directly serves Dubai International Airport terminals, making airport transfers simple and efficient. No surge pricing, no traffic, no negotiation—the obvious choice if you travel light or the reverse at departure.
Airport Taxi

Taxis are available from directly outside of all three terminals at Dubai Airport and take just 20 minutes to reach the city center of Dubai. Dubai taxi drivers use taximeters to calculate the cost of fares, with an additional €6 (AED 25) airport surcharge. Locals pay 40–80 AED (~$11–$22) for airport taxi in Dubai; tourist spots charge 80–150 AED. Use official beige taxis only, not unmarked cars outside arrivals. Avoid negotiating a set fare—metered is always cheaper.
Dubai Metro (Red and Green Lines)

The Dubai Metro, operated by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), is a fully automated, driverless rail network designed to connect key residential, business, and tourism zones across the city. Mon-Thu & Sat: 5AM - 12AM Friday: 5AM - 1AM Sunday: 8AM - 12AM Hours may change during public holidays. Safety features include 24/7 CCTV cameras, emergency communication buttons, dedicated women and children cabins, excellent lighting at all stations and trains, regular staff patrols, and multilingual assistance. Air-conditioned and packed during rush hours; avoid them if you hate crowds.
RTA Buses (150+ Routes)

The bus network is massive — over 150 routes connect areas the metro doesn't reach. For residents living in areas like Al Quoz, Karama, Satwa, or Mirdif, the bus is the primary way to get around. For tourists, buses are useful for reaching beaches, souks, and residential neighbourhoods off the metro map. Most Dubai buses are still operational between 4:30 a.m. and midnight, but some even run 24 hours a day. Same Nol card works everywhere; buses are slower than metro but reach further.
Uber or Careem

Uber and Careem are generally 10-20% cheaper than official Dubai taxis for equivalent journeys, though this varies by route and time. For example, a trip from Dubai Mall to Marina costs AED 50-70 ($14-19) by taxi but AED 40-60 ($11-16) by Uber/Careem during normal pricing. Download both apps and check pricing before booking. They avoid the shift-change scramble that hits official taxis between 4–5:30 PM.

Wojhati: A journey planner app that provides a real-time map with timings of bus routes and stops, major landmarks, as well as, departure and arrival timings. The Wojhati App is extremely helpful if you want to find out what time the bus will arrive/depart from the stop you are at. You can also get live transport updates about delays and diversions if there are any. Nol cards can now be topped up using the S'hail app. Supporting S'hail app with nol top-up service, which has been launched of late, aims to broaden the range of services in the app that turns it into a comprehensive one-stop smart platform capable of improving customers' mobility experience. Better for real-time bus info and journey planning than the main RTA app.
Night Buses and Late Taxis

The N30 service from Dragon Mart Two to Terminal Two via Rashidiya Metro Station will run from 10pm to 5am. Night Buses: Limited routes, such as F55, operate round the clock to cater to late-night travelers. Taxis are available 24/7, so you can easily catch one at any time of day. For after-midnight travel, official RTA taxis are safest; ride-hailing apps add surge pricing, so compare before booking. The metro closes at midnight, so night movement depends on these options.
