Landed in London? Here is the fastest way into town

You land at one of the world's busiest airports 15 miles west of central London with luggage, jet lag and the question that stops every traveler: what's the actual best way in? The answer depends on whether you value speed, cost, convenience or a mix of all three—and whether you have 15 minutes or 90 to spare. This ranking orders the main routes by speed first, then by value within each speed band, because the fastest isn't always the one you'll choose when you see the price.

A few practical notes before you start: all operating hours and fares were current as of September 2026. Train services run from Terminals 2/3, 4 and 5—check which terminal you're at before you buy a ticket. Traffic to central London can swing journey times by 20 minutes either way, so if you book a taxi or coach, arrive with buffer time. The Piccadilly Line and Elizabeth Line accept contactless cards and Oyster, which is always cheaper than cash. Pre-book a minicab transfer if you're traveling with luggage or a group; the fixed price often beats a metered cab when you split it.

  1. Heathrow Express

    Terminals 2/3 and 5 to London Paddington · Non-stop train · 15 min; £10 advance (30+ days) or £26 walk-up; 05:10–23:30 daily

The fastest way between Heathrow and central London takes 15 minutes from Terminals 2 & 3, with trains running every 15 minutes to London Paddington. A Standard Class single costs £26 on the day. Book 30 or more days ahead and pay just £10. Every seat has power, luggage space and free Wi-Fi. Choose this if Paddington is your destination or you're catching a onward train; for anywhere else in London, you'll change to the Tube, adding time and a second fare.

  2. Elizabeth Line

Terminals 2/3, 4 and 5 to central London · Modern cross-city train · 30–45 min; £15.50 all day; First train 05:00, last around midnight

The Elizabeth Line reaches Paddington in about 30 minutes from Terminals 2 & 3 and costs a flat £15.50 from zone 1. It calls at Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf. It's the only train that reaches Terminal 4 directly. Trains run about every 15 minutes to each terminal. Pick this over the Heathrow Express if your hotel is anywhere other than Paddington or if you're in no hurry; the £11.50 saving per ticket buys a drink, and you stay on one train the whole way.

  3. Piccadilly Line (London Underground)

    Terminals 2/3, 4 and 5 to central London · Tube · 50–60 min; £5.90 contactless; 05:00–23:30 daily, plus Night Tube Friday/Saturday

The Piccadilly line takes about 50 minutes to central London and trains never run more than ten minutes apart, even off-peak. Off-peak fares start from £5.90 with contactless or Oyster. The line stops at South Kensington, Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden and Kings Cross. Night Tube runs all night on Friday and Saturday. This is the budget option for anyone not burdened with suitcases and arriving during the day; the Tube is crowded during evening rush hour, and luggage makes the journey miserable.

  4. National Express Coach

Heathrow Central Bus Station (T2/3) to London Victoria Coach Station · Long-distance coach · 35–65 min depending on traffic; from £9.50; First coach 1:00am, last 23:59pm

The fastest coach journey takes 25 minutes to the Earl's Court stop. A one-way ticket from Heathrow to London is available from £9.50. Victoria Coach Station sits 300 metres from the tube network and Victoria Rail Station. The coach takes 40–65 minutes and is an easy way of travelling to central London if you want to avoid the underground or train. Book this if you have checked luggage and don't mind a longer journey; it's direct, cheap and the coaches have WiFi and air conditioning.

  5. Black Cab from Taxi Rank

Heathrow terminals (all) to central London · Licensed metered taxi · 30–60 min depending on traffic; £75–£110 plus £7 terminal drop-off; 24/7

Black cabs are available 24/7 from official ranks outside all terminals and take around 30–45 minutes when roads are clear. A licensed black cab to central London typically costs £70–£120, with a £1.60 Heathrow rank surcharge. Add the £7 terminal drop-off fee to your final bill. Join the queue, no booking needed. Choose this only if you're arriving late (when trains shut down), traveling with two others (to split the fare), or have mobility issues; the meter runs on time and distance, so traffic inflates the cost quickly.

  6. Pre-booked Minicab

Heathrow terminals (all) to central London · Fixed-price private car · 45–75 min depending on traffic; £45–£75 fixed (includes Heathrow drop-off); 24/7

A pre-booked minicab costs £45–£75 fixed, compared to £75–£110 in a black cab. Pre-booked minicabs include meet-and-greet inside the arrivals terminal with a name board. Pre-booked transfers allow the price, vehicle and pickup arrangement to be reviewed before the flight. Book online 24 hours ahead. This beats a black cab meter for families and groups; you know the price before you land, meet your driver by name and get door-to-door service without waiting in a queue.

  7. Night Bus (Route N9)

Heathrow terminals (all) to central London · Local overnight bus · 90+ min depending on traffic; £1.75 contactless; Midnight–05:00 approx

The N9 night bus is the cheapest option at £1.75, running approximately midnight to 05:00. Buses are slow, unpredictable and only useful if you land between midnight and dawn with minimal luggage. The savings aren't worth the journey; take the Piccadilly Line Night Tube instead (Friday and Saturday only) or wait for the first Elizabeth Line train at dawn.

  8. Elizabeth Line from Terminal 4

Terminal 4 to central London and east · Modern cross-city train · 30–45 min to Bond Street; £15.50 flat all day; 05:00–midnight approx

The Elizabeth Line is the only train that reaches Terminal 4 directly. Journey time is around 30 minutes to the station for Terminals 2 and 3, with Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 a few minutes either side. A pay-as-you-go journey between any zone 1 station and the airport is a flat £15.50. If you're flying from Terminal 4, skip the free connecting train to Terminals 2/3 and board the Elizabeth Line directly; it saves time and eliminates a change.

  9. Piccadilly Line Night Tube (Friday and Saturday)

Terminals 2/3, 4 and 5 to central London · Underground all-night service · 50–60 min; £5.90 contactless; All night Friday and Saturday only

Night Tube runs all night on Friday and Saturday on the Piccadilly line. Night Tube does not serve Terminal 4. Fares start from £5.90. This is the budget option if you land between midnight and 05:00 on a Friday or Saturday; trains run every 10 minutes and you stay awake anyway on a red-eye arrival.

  10. Ride-hailing App (Uber, Bolt)

Heathrow terminals (pickup from terminal parking, not forecourt) to central London · On-demand car · 45–75 min depending on traffic and surge; £35–£90 variable; 24/7

Ride-hailing apps include 20% VAT and a £7 Heathrow drop-off charge as of January 2026. Pickups are in the short-stay car park—Terminal 2 Level 4 Row H, Terminal 5 Level 1 Row R—not at the forecourt; Terminal 4 pickup moved to T4 Park & Ride on 23 June 2026. UberX fares from Heathrow generally range from £55 to £90, but these prices are subject to significant surge pricing during peak demand. Skip this unless you're arriving at 3am with no luggage and flexible timing; surge pricing can double the fare, and parking validation adds delay.
