The plant-based London list even meat lovers will save

London's vegetarian restaurants no longer serve as virtuous alternatives—they're some of the city's best places to eat, period. The meal flows from how easy it is to get in: Plates demands you book months ahead; Gauthier and Tendril take advance bookings. Mildreds and Bubala fill quickly but run no-reservations or same-week slots. Everything else is walk-in, or requires a call.

The range spans Michelin-starred tasting menus running £95–120, French fine dining at £55–95, intimate small-plates spots around £40–45, casual global restaurants at £15–25, and fried chicken for under £12. Across all price points, the cooking separates itself by treating vegetables as they deserve: as the star.

  1. Plates

Old Street, Shoreditch · Vegan tasting menu · £95–120, book months ahead

Plates made history in February 2025 as the first fully vegan restaurant in the UK to win a Michelin star. Chef Kirk Haworth trained at The French Laundry, Restaurant Sat Bains and Northcote before turning to plant-based cooking after a Lyme disease diagnosis. The £109 tasting menu includes barbecued maitake mushroom with black bean mole, kimchi, aioli and puffed rice, as well as Cornish potatoes with toasted hazelnut and sweet and sour apricot, and caramelised lions mane with blackberries, beetroot, gem lettuce and hibiscus. Two dozen covers, one seating, no second chances—this is the table to chase.

  2. Gauthier Soho

Romilly Street, Soho · Vegan French fine dining · £55–95, advance booking

Alexis Gauthier made waves by turning his Michelin-starred French restaurant fully vegan in 2021. In 2026, it remains a bucket-list destination. Housed in a Regency townhouse, Gauthier offers a multi-course Grand Dîner that proves French technique can be perfected using only plants. The restaurant has introduced a great-value £55 five-course Petit Dîner, available at 5pm only, and an eight-course vegan feast for £95 in the evening.

  3. Holy Carrot

Portobello Road, Notting Hill · Vegan, mostly fine fire-cooked vegetables · £45+ tasting menu

Holy Carrot serves signature dishes such as truffle celeriac risotto or holy buffalo wings, adopting a 'peel to root' approach. The celeriac is the star dish: discs of the delicately flavoured root are fried in a crispy, golden crumb, and doused with a lip-smacking buffalo sauce. The restaurant is vegetarian, with a tasting menu available at £45 in addition to the a la carte choice. Chef Daniel Watkins was formerly co-founder of ACME Fire Cult.

  4. Tendril

Princes Street, Mayfair · Mostly vegan small plates · £27–45, advance booking

The Discovery menu costs £45 with a selection of snacks and starters, a couple of larger dishes and something sweet to finish, while a la carte smaller dishes are in the £10–13 price point and larger mains around £18. There are global influences across the vegetable-led dishes at this 'mostly vegan' restaurant, from the massaman sauce with pak choi to the 'Chinatown' purple potatoes. A Prix Fixe menu is available at £27 for three courses, available Tuesday to Friday.

  5. Bubala

Spitalfields · Vegetarian and vegan Middle Eastern small plates · £39–45 sharing menus, walk-in or book ahead

Bubala serves an entirely vegetarian menu with plenty of vegan options, including oyster mushroom skewers, fried aubergine with peanuts and hummus-loaded flatbreads. Bubala offers either a vegan or vegetarian sharing menu at £39 per person. The house hummus is slicked with a languorous layer of burnt butter, making it the perfect partner for the laffa flatbread. The room has counter seating, tightly packed tables, and a warm buzz that makes it feel like a little slice of Tel Aviv in London.

  6. Mildreds

Lexington Street, Soho · Fully vegan global fusion · £15–30, walk-in or book ahead

Mildreds first opened on Greek Street in 1988 and switched from vegetarian to fully vegan in 2021. The Lexington Street site is compact and buzzing, with tightly packed wooden tables and a no-reservations policy that creates communal energy. The newer locations in Camden and King's Cross are more spacious. The menu features Sri Lankan sweet potato curry, Korean fried chick'n with gochujang glaze, and a halloumi-style burger made from grilled tofu with harissa mayo.

  7. The Gate

Queen Caroline Street, Hammersmith · Plant-based vegetarian, brunch weekends · £15–30, advance booking recommended

The menu is 100% plant-based with eggs only served during weekend brunches. Signature dishes such as crispy polenta chips, courgette flowers and plantain showcase the restaurant's dedication to flavour, texture and variety. The menu offers dishes like crispy courgette flowers stuffed with sweet potato and pine nuts; a Thai red curry dotted with plantain and shiitake mushrooms; and creamy chipotle mushrooms with polenta cake. It's a great choice for a pre-show meal, located a short walk from the Hammersmith Apollo and Riverside Studios.

  8. Diwana Bhel Poori House

Drummond Street, Euston · Entirely vegetarian South Indian · £10–20, buffet lunch £6.95, bring your own beer

Diwana is renowned for dishes like the beloved Mysore masala dosa, bhel poori, and an impressive Diwana Thali. Diwana has been a Drummond Street fixture since 1971, drawing families from across the capital with its upbeat atmosphere and menu of south Indian vegetarian street food. At lunch they do a tremendous buffet with an astonishing range of vegetarian food from starters to dal, curry, paneer, rice, breads, shrikand, barfi, gulab jamun—all you can eat for £6.95 a head.

  9. Temple of Seitan

Multiple London locations (Hackney, Camden, Brixton, Hammersmith, Waterloo, others) · Vegan fried chicken · Under £12, counter service

A vegan fried chicken shop that behaves exactly like a fried chicken shop—no lecture, no health framing. Seitan in a buttermilk-style batter: burgers, wings, tenders and fries at chicken-shop prices. Seitan is wheat gluten, which fries and shreds closer to chicken than soy does. Under £12, counter service, walk-in. Sites across London include Hackney, Camden, Brixton, Hammersmith, Waterloo and Wood Green; some are takeaway only.

  10. Tofu Vegan

Multiple London locations (Islington, Spitalfields, Golders Green) · Entirely vegan Chinese · £12–18, walk-in

Tofu Vegan brings the vibrant flavors of China to London with an entirely plant-based menu designed to delight vegans, vegetarians, and even meat-eaters. Specializing in dishes made with tofu, mushrooms, and expertly crafted Asian imitation meats, the restaurant showcases the versatility of plant-based cuisine.
