The queue at the Harbour Court doesn't really form until half past twelve, and by one it's spilling past the lobby lounge and into the corridor, families in church clothes standing next to couples who clearly haven't slept much. Nobody is checking their watch. That's the tell of a good Colombo brunch: the room fills slowly and then all at once, and once you're in, you're not leaving before the dessert table has been properly worked through.
This city does brunch the way it does most things well: loudly, generously, and mostly on a Sunday between half past twelve and three. There's the hotel-buffet spectacle, roast stations and free-flowing bubbly included, and there's the quieter version, a plate of something French on a Saturday morning with the newspaper still folded.
