Brunch in Colombo: what you actually get for the money

Hotel spreads, garden cafés and the Sunday-only sittings — how Colombo brunch works and where the value sits.
Brunch in Colombo splits cleanly into two things wearing the same name, and knowing which one you are booking saves both money and disappointment.
The first is the hotel spread: a long buffet, a carvery, a live station or three, and a fixed price per head. These run at weekends, usually a single sitting from late morning to mid-afternoon, and they are priced for a table that intends to stay for the duration. Go hungry, go late in the sitting rather than early, and check whether beverages are included before you assume — in Colombo they usually are not, and adding them afterwards is where the bill changes shape.
The second is the café brunch: a short à la carte menu, eggs done properly, decent coffee, a garden or a verandah, and a bill a third of the size. Colombo 7 and the streets around Flower Road and Horton Place have the highest concentration of these, and they are the better answer if what you want is a long unhurried breakfast rather than an event.
Two practical notes. Weekend sittings book out for the first Sunday of the month more than any other, and the last Sunday is reliably the quietest. And Colombo brunch is an outdoor sport for most of the year, which means the pleasant tables are the shaded ones — ask when you book rather than when you arrive.
Prices move here, and menus change with what the market has. Confirm the current rate with the venue rather than with a listing, including ours.
