A first day in Colombo, planned properly

Most first days in Colombo go wrong for one reason: they are planned as if the afternoon is usable. It is not, between roughly eleven and three, and building around that single fact fixes almost everything else.

Start early. Pettah, the market district behind the fort, is at its best between seven and ten — the streets are full, the produce is moving, and it is still cool enough to walk. It is also the part of the city that most rewards having no plan; the interest is in the density, not in any particular building.

Move indoors for the middle of the day. Colombo 7 holds the museums, the galleries and the calmest cafés, and it is where to spend the hours when walking outside stops being enjoyable. A long lunch here is not a waste of the day, it is the correct use of it.

The late afternoon belongs to Galle Face Green. Arrive by five, walk the promenade, eat something from the carts, and stay for the sunset over the water — it is the one thing every visitor should do and the one thing that is genuinely better than its reputation.

For the evening, pick a rooftop. The city reads completely differently from six floors up, and the temperature finally cooperates.

What to skip on a first day: anything requiring a long drive. Colombo traffic will take an hour of your day for a destination twenty minutes away, and there is more than enough within the old city to fill the time properly.
