Eating late in Colombo: what is open after eleven

Colombo is not a late city by regional standards, but it is not an early one either, and knowing the three tiers of late food saves a lot of driving around.

The first tier is kottu. Kottu counters run past midnight across the city and the sound of the blades on the griddle is the reliable signal that a place is still serving. It is the default late meal here for a reason: fast, cheap, made in front of you, and better at eleven than at seven because the griddle has been going all evening.

The second tier is the hotel coffee shop. Most of the larger hotels keep one restaurant running very late or around the clock, and while nobody goes there for the cooking, they are air-conditioned, they take cards, and they are open when nothing else is. The Galle Road corridor between Kollupitiya and Bambalapitiya has the highest concentration.

The third tier is the short strip of independent late kitchens that have grown up around the nightlife in Colombo 3 and 5. These close when the trade stops rather than at a fixed hour, which means they are excellent on a Friday and shut on a Tuesday.

One practical note. Late-night Colombo is a car city, and ride-hailing surges sharply after the clubs close on weekend nights. If you are eating after a night out, eating near where you are going home to is cheaper than eating near where you were.

Opening hours here are informal. Treat any published closing time as a strong hint rather than a commitment.
