Singapore does unlimited dining at every price point, and the value curve is not the one you would expect.
At the bottom, conveyor-belt hotpot has become the format to beat — this August a new opening put more than a hundred dishes on a belt at $22.90++, which is roughly the price of two cocktails. The quality is exactly what you would expect at that price and the point is not quality, it is that four people can eat for an hour for less than one main course elsewhere.
The mid tier is Japanese and Korean barbecue, where unlimited is priced per person with a strict time limit — ninety minutes is standard, two hours generous. Time limits matter more here than the menu: a ninety-minute barbecue where you cook everything yourself is a shorter meal than it sounds.
The top tier is the hotel buffet, and this is where the value equation inverts. The price per head is high and the reason to go is the seafood and the carving station, so the question is simply whether you eat enough of those to clear the number. If you were going to have two courses and a coffee, you were never going to.
