Running since the 1990s, Someplace Else remains one of eastern India's most important music rooms. Bands lean toward classic rock covers, Bollywood reworks, and the occasional original. The crowd listens instead of shouting over a DJ. Good live music every night, and it isn't too hard on the pocket.
Roxy

The famous dance club embodies a 60's style glamour complete with mood lightings, brick walls and the best dance floor in the city. The space has that old Kolkata feel—dim lighting, wooden interiors, the kind of patina that you can't fake. The music shifts late toward club tracks.

Olypub

Dim, open since the 1950s, Olypub is a room where writers, artists, and everyday Bengalis share tables without performance. Been around since 1947 and was known as the Olympia Bar & Restaurant back then, born again as Olypub in the early 1980s, this one's full of stories, famed for its beef steak and really cheap drinks. No dress code, no door charge, no theatre.

Bakstage is Kolkata's quintessential rock bar, complete with walls covered in vinyl discs and cassettes and seat covers depicting everybody's favorite musos. Fan of the disco era and rock music, the place is usually packed during the weekends and has an excellent drinks menu. In the heart of IT land in Salt Lake, Backstage sits pretty on the first floor of the newly built complex with valet parking available.

Nocturne

With multiple sections, a separate lounge level, dance floor, hookah bar and underground coffee shop, Nocturne is a fine example of the nightlife in Kolkata. A popular name in Kolkata's nightlife scene since 2010, Nocturne offers the best clubbing experience in the city. Three levels mean you can shift mood from conversation to dancing without leaving.
Tantra

Launched in 2000 to cater to the hardcore party animals in Kolkata, Tantra features two swanky bars, a hangout zone, and an effervescent dance floor complete with neon lights and an extensive menu of spirits and finger food. Hotel clubs and New Town venues tighten the dress code on weekends—chappals or very casual clothing can get groups turned away. Peak after 11 PM.
